So, not many people may know this, but one out of every five homes in Tallahassee has Radon levels that exceed the acceptable limits. This is a problem and here’s why.
- Not many people know what Radon is. Radon is a gas. You can not detect it unless you get your home tested. It is also the second-leading cause of lung cancer in the United States. In addition to cancer, it poses significant health risks to families that are exposed over a long period of time.
- Very few people are aware that Radon is as prevalent or as dangerous as it is. This means that very few home buyers or home sellers get their homes tested. Once tested, homes can be treated and made safe, but you can’t fix the problem unless you know about it.
- There is currently no law in effect that says that residential homes must be tested. Because of the prevalence of this problem, I believe this may change in the near future. However, until that time, it is up to us to make sure we test our homes.
